Since its debut in 1985, the Proton Saga has remained the best-selling model from Malaysia’s national carmaker, with over two million units sold globally. Designed to serve the everyday commuting needs of Malaysians, the Saga continues to hold a special place in the hearts of many, staying true to its practical, accessible, and family-friendly roots.

According to Proton’s recent survey of 57,674 respondents in 2024, the Saga remains highly popular among first-time buyers, with 64% of owners purchasing their first car. An additional 18% are buyers adding to their existing fleet, while 17% are replacing older vehicles. Interestingly, 48% of these buyers are married with children, reinforcing the Saga’s reputation as a car that fits the needs of everyday families.
Proton has also made notable strides in improving the Saga’s build quality. By adopting the Global Consumer Product Audit (GCPA) — a rigorous international benchmark for quality — the Saga's GCPA score was reduced from 2,580 points in August 2024 to just 1,050 points by May 2025. A lower GCPA score indicates fewer issues on the production line, and Proton now claims that the Saga’s quality is on par with its closest competitor, likely referring to the Perodua Bezza.

Speaking on the occasion, Proton described the Saga as “a symbol of the nation’s progress, mobility, and everyday achievement,” adding that its strong national appeal and long-standing practicality continue to drive its relevance today.
Looking ahead, Proton has confirmed that a new-generation Saga model is in development, signaling its commitment to evolve the beloved nameplate for future generations.

To commemorate this milestone, Proton has partnered with Mattel to release a limited-edition Hot Wheels Proton Saga. The special model comes in white, packaged with custom artwork by Saw Jane Harn, the winner of the Hot Wheels x Proton Kids Design Competition 2023. This exclusive collectible is now available at selected retailers and Proton outlets nationwide.
